Testing vehicle toughness can be done best in the World Rally Championship (WRC); this was understood by Subaru when they first entered the race in 1990. The compact Impreza followed two years later, now equipped with tested technology. This sports sedan gained an immense fanbase, as drivers sought a street car with WRC-worthy power. Generation two of the Impreza arrived in 2000, the WRX STi model (from Subaru Tecnica International) boasting a reinforced cylinder block, molybdenum-coated steel pistons, high-capacity turbo and intercooler, and a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine.
